Best fitness hotspots in Brighton and Hove
Is a fitter new you still on the agenda for this year? Or are you just looking for a new hobby that involves you getting physical? Good news! We have tried and tested a handful of the best fitness hotspots in town.
Best for a quick fix
Fancy yourself being the next Victoria Pendleton? Well, this is a good starting point. Cycle City may not provide the velodrome, but what they do provide is a hard-hitting ride set in nightclub-esque studio. Spin along to heart pumping music and stop at the refuel bar for that post-workout refreshment courtesy of 42 Juice. You can choose the amount rides you wish to partake in with classes ranging between 30, 45 & 60 minutes.
In a nutshell, the workout is performed on a stationary bike riding along in time with the music. Expect to be put through your paces alternating between bursts of intensive sprints, recovery periods and resistance training intervals. Oh...and to top it off they throw some dumbbells in the mix for that upper body burn!
Best for learning a new skill
If you’re a fan of Cirque Du Soleil or have just found yourself swinging from your curtain drapes pretending to be a circus performer, High Top Circus offer circus-based classes focussing on aerial work.
These classes help to improve flexibility, strength and coordination skills and cater for all abilities. They also regularly hold workshops for those wanting to enhance their performance skills. It’s a great combination of fitness and fun to release those feel-good endorphins!
Best for a holistic approach
Yoga and Pilates have been practised for hundreds of years, becoming quite a phenomenon amongst the health-conscious and making a name for itself in fitness circles thanks to celebrity super-fans such as fitness bloggers Cat Meffan, Carly Rowena and Hollie Grant of Pilates PT fame.
Studio iO is a holistic space for practising Yoga, Pilates and Meditation. This hidden gem is tucked away on a small street just off of London Road offering a variety of method-based classes perfect for a complete beginner or for the more experienced.
Best for the hardcore
Expect to work up a sweat with Nick’s classes. Think burpees, press ups, sit ups and jumping jacks in row. Makes you feel exhausted just reading that, doesn’t it? High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is not for the faint-hearted! Incorporating this type of cardiovascular training into your workouts will help optimise the fat-burning process with effective results.
I’d recommend trying the ‘Box’ class to start with if you're a complete novice to HIIT. For those wanting a more committed and bespoke platform, Nick offers personal training sessions and runs occasional workshops and fitness retreats.
Credit must be given to Nick’s supportive and encouraging teaching style. He wins extra bonus points for the uplifting social element found at the end of the free boot camp that runs every last Sunday of each month - a spot of brunch to refuel after a positively gruelling workout! #fitfam and #squadgoals springs to mind!
Best for that personal touch
Looking for an activity to do with your girl gang? Or looking for a team-building activity at your workplace? Maybe you're looking for something that little bit different for a special occasion?
Aesthete Athlete is a dance-inspired fitness programme providing bespoke workshops and masterclasses for individuals, special events and corporate companies. What makes Aesthete Athlete unique is its artistic approach to fitness, with the means of upgrading the conventional workout. The aim is not only to enhance your physique and improve your athleticism, but the benefit of promoting mental and physical wellbeing.
Best for variety
Since bursting onto the scene in 2011, Boxercise Bootcamp has grown in popularity after establishing itself as a firm favourite amongst the local fitness-fanatics. Maybe it’s due to the fact that you're spoilt for choice when it comes to the variety of fitness treats on offer.
Don’t let the title fool you! It’s not purely boxing with exercise. Boasting over 200 classes a month, Boxercise Bootcamp offer classes in cardio and strength training such as Legs, Abs and Booty, TRX Suspension and Kettlebells. There’s a class for everyone alongside additional services such as personal training sessions, small group workshops and boot camps, fitness retreats and a smoothie bar.
Best for the wannabe ballerina
Did you try your hand at ballet when you were little, or have felt inspired by Black Swan? Well, it’s time to put on your tutu and take centre stage!
Brighton Ballet Company offer adult ballet classes for all ages. Whether it’s fitness for fun or you fancy yourself as the next Darcey Bussell, there is class for everyone one of any ability. Technique-based classes are held at Bird Studios, with the opportunity to work towards a performance. Sessions are typically finished off with pointe work - pointe shoes are ultimately the new high heels!
