Brighton brand spotlight: Babydol Clothing

As we know after so many gorgeous street stylers, Brighton has got some serious no-fucks-given style, and we are SO here for it. Alongside our countless invaluable vintage and second-hand shops, Brighton Girls are paving the way with brands of their own to really take things to the next level.

Following her showcase at London Fashion Week with Fashion's Finest UK last weekend, we caught up with Megan Wyatt, the badass creator of Babydol Clothing, to hear all about her brand and her journey.

Tell us all about Babydol clothing

I started Babydol in November 2015 just after I graduated from University. I was confused about what I wanted to do and whilst looking for a job and starting a part time internship at Brighton Fashion Week, I started selling a few handmade items online. Shortly after this I decided to start a website and that's how it all began!

I have always dressed differently and I wanted to create a brand that celebrates that. My clothes are created for sassy/independent individuals that don't care what anyone else thinks of them - they dress for themselves not for other people - which is so important!

What inspires your designs?

I am inspired by so many different things. I am very passionate about art and I would consider my work a mixture of art and fashion. During my time at Uni I was massively inspired by Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama and Sebastian Masuda. I take a lot of inspiration from music, I don't think I could work without it.

Right now. I have Kesha's album 'Rainbow' on repeat. The album is so empowering and motivating, I literally dance around my studio to it all day, everyday! A big one for me is people. I am a big people watcher and I take so much inspiration from the people around me.

What's your favourite part of the design process?

I don't know if i could pick my favourite part, I absolutely love the whole process. I do love putting all of my ideas on paper though. Creating super colourful, kind of messy mood boards is so much fun and this is what gets me really excited and inspired.

What is your favourite piece of clothing you've designed?

My favourite piece of clothing so far has to be my fluffy, rainbow faux fur coats! I love sourcing colourful fabrics that you don't see often. I spend so long fabric hunting!

Who are your favourite Instagrammers?

I love the Confetti Crowd! I remember when I found their blog for the first time and I have been amazed by them ever since. I literally have so many girl boss's in my life right now and they all inspire me every single day. It's amazing!

What's next for Babydol?

Just to keep on growing. I have so much planned and so many goals but I won't give too much away. It will always get bigger and better! I am so determined and I absolutely love what I do, so I won't be going anywhere, let's put it that way.

Do you have any advice for aspiring designers out there?

I would say if you want it GO FOR IT! But you have to work damn hard. If you're passionate you can achieve the things you want to but it will take time. You just have to persevere and keep going, no matter how hard things get.

As serious as all of that sounds, have fun with it! Remember, this is your dream so it should be enjoyable. Take your time and enjoy the process.
